Concerned that your VIP pet may have cancer?

Cancer is a disease caused by abnormal cells that multiply quickly and spread to other parts of the body. These cells don’t always cause problems, but when they do, it’s called a tumor. Tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Many of us are familiar with how devastating this disease is. Fortunately, thanks to the latest technology in cancer screening, we can detect and treat cancer before it worsens.

What is early cancer screening?

Humans get mammograms and colonoscopies, and other cancer screening tests to help detect cancer early. We use the the canine equivalent of these procedures. It’s a blood test that is implemented as part of preventative care during wellness visits to our office.

The goal is to look for cancer when your pet is feeling well before they start showing clinical signs.

How does it work?

We perform a liquid biopsy test that uses a simple blood draw to detect abnormal DNA released into circulation by cancer cells. The procedure has the following steps:

  1. We will take a blood sample from your pet.
  2. We then run the liquid biopsy test to check for over 30 different types of cancer, including eight of the most common cancers in dogs.
  3. We then use specialized technology to analyze and detect changes in the DNA that indicate cancer.

Pets with cancer that is caught early have a better chance to beat it!

The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better the prognosis. Early detection can lead to less invasive and less expensive treatment resulting in a better quality of life for your pet.

Cancer is more common in older pets, however, there are some cancers that occur at any age such as lymphoma and osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Some types of cancer have different causes depending on the type of cell they affect, so it’s important to understand which type is affecting your pet and how it may be treated if caught early enough.
