Pet Vaccinations

You’re probably familiar with the concept of vaccination. We’re all familiar with the idea of getting a vaccine for humans, but what about pets? Animals can get sick from certain diseases just like we do, and vaccinating your pet is the best way to protect them and others in your community from those illnesses.

What are vaccines?

Vaccines contain a dead or weakened version of the disease-causing organism that does not cause disease but triggers an immune response in your pet. Vaccines are often given to healthy animals so that they can build up antibodies before they are exposed to the actual disease. Vaccines are used this way to prevent your pet from getting diseases. Vaccines are not harmful and are an important part of your pet’s health care. They protect your pet from getting sick, which can be a costly and unpleasant experience for both of you.

How do vaccines prevent disease in my pets?

Once your pet has been exposed to the antibodies that cause the disease, their immune systems can create a strong response to fight the disease if they come in contact with it in the future.

For example, if you were going on vacation and decided you want your dog vaccinated against leptospirosis (a bacterial infection spread through water), your vet would administer a vaccine containing Lepto antigens. These antigens stimulate the body’s immune system without causing any illness whatsoever! They just prepare the immune system for when your dog goes swimming at the beach or drinks out of puddles where animals urinate (yuck!).

When does my pet need to get vaccinated?

At VIP Animal Hospital, we know that your pet needs different treatments at different stages of life, so we offer fully customized schedules for each patient. If you have a puppy, kitten, or another young animal, it is recommended that they are given their first dose of vaccinations between six and 8 weeks of age.

For other pets, the regularity of their vaccinations and boosters is dependent on their health, age, and lifestyle. We’ll work together with you to adapt your pet’s vaccination schedule to their needs.

Like us, cats and dogs need certain vaccines to stay healthy.

Just like us, your pet needs vaccines to stay healthy and live longer. That also means that it’s important to keep up with regular vaccinations for your pets because disease outbreaks can happen at any time. You don’t want to be surprised by a disease that has spread into your neighborhood.
